Our Team Members

Donal has worked in the renewable power industry for 10 years as a grid specialist. He joined SWS in 2005 and played a key role in the development of their wind portfolio, being directly involved in the construction and the energisation of over 200MWs in Ireland and Northern Ireland. 

These projects included both transmission and distribution connections, contestable build and uncontested grid assets. Donal was involved in the sale of an asset portfolio to Bord Gais in 2010. He was promoted to grid manager responsible for a team of grid engineers and continued to lead the build out of new connections for a further 250MWs of wind assets while continuing the grid activities on a further 300-400MWs of new asset development. 

Donal has been heavily involved in policy development through the COPP consultation and subsequent challenges to some of the decisions made by the system operators and regulators. He has extensive experience of operational grid issues including grid code testing and the application of constraints and curtailment on wind assets. 

Donal now leads GES’s Grid and Electrical Engineering activities for a range of clients including both small and large wind developments, biomass and solar. He is also Chariman of the IWEA Grid Committee, and is a member of the IWEA Council, DS Advisory Council and CER Generator Connections Liaison Group.
